I have to wonder to myself: if you think Israel should continue to exist as a Jewish state, why do Reform or Conservative Jews think it is fine for the Orthodox rabbis to control marriage in Israel? Should Israel continue to remain a Jewish state?
Israel does not have domestic civil marriage; instead, matters of marriage and divorce for Jewish citizens are legally controlled by the Orthodox Chief Rabbinate and Orthodox rabbinical courts.
Religious Jurisdiction Only: Israel has no secular or civil marriage option performed within its borders for the majority of the population (with very limited exceptions for recognized non-religious civil unions under specific conditions).
The Orthodox Monopoly for Jews: The Chief Rabbinate of Israel is the sole authority permitted to perform and register Jewish marriages inside the country. Only marriages conducted according to Orthodox Jewish law are recognized locally.
Exclusion of Non-Orthodox Streams: Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist rabbis have no legal authority to perform official weddings in Israel, and marriages conducted by them are not recognized by the state.
Restrictions on Inter-Faith and Same-Sex Couples: Orthodox law forbids interfaith marriages (marrying non-Jews) and same-sex marriages, meaning these couples cannot legally marry one another inside Israel.
Freier - Being called a freier is one of the strongest insults in Israeli society — worse than many curses — because it implies you're naive, weak, or lack street smarts/survival instincts. - The unofficial Israeli "commandment" is often jokingly summarized as: "Lo lehiyot freier" = "Don't be a sucker."
In Israeli culture, "freier" (פראייר) is a widely used slang term that roughly translates to a "sucker," "chump," or "pushover". It describes someone who is easily fooled, overly naive, or taken advantage of because they strictly follow the rules while others cut corners. Avoiding the label of a freier is so deeply embedded in the national psyche that it is jokingly referred to as the "11th commandment" of Israeli life.
