The eight trigrams and their primary associations are:
- ☰ Qian (Heaven): The Creative, force, strength, father.
- ☷ Kun (Earth): The Receptive, devotion, nurturing, mother.
- ☵ Kan (Water): The Abysmal, danger, depth, fluidity.
- ☲ Li (Fire): The Clinging, brightness, clarity, illumination.
- ☳ Zhen (Thunder): The Arousing, movement, initiation, shock.
- ☴ Xun (Wind): The Gentle, penetration, flexibility, subtle influence.
- ☶ Gen (Mountain): Keeping Still, stillness, stability, rest.
- ☱ Dui (Lake): The Joyous, openness, pleasure, communication.
"Squared" as Combined
When two trigrams are combined, one placed above the other, they form a hexagram, a six-line figure. There are 8 x 8 = 64 possible hexagrams, which constitute the main body of the ancient text known as the I Ching, or Book of Changes.
